From Glasgow to Hven to London, my first roll of film is well traveled. An experiment with light, perspective and shadow composition, this series of photos allowed me to play around with the recently discovered possibilities that come with shooting analog. Brought on by a growing infatuation with film, a digital camera that reached the end of its lifespan and a recently found Pentax camera from my grandfather, the equation seemed to guide me towards this new creative hobby.
I find myself repeatedly drawn to the aesthetic of the botanic gardens in Glasgow, and apparently unable to keep my finger off the shutter release button whenever I step inside the glass structure. I end up with nearly identical images, shot from similar vantage points during different visits, yet don’t see this behavior ending anytime soon.
In mid-April, I spent a weekend at our summerhouse on Hven, a small island outside of Landskrona in the south of Sweden. It was one of the first (the first?) warm weekends of the year, when we were tentatively emerging from hibernation. Not knowing that we were about to bypass spring and leap straight to summer this year, I remember biking (translation: struggling uphill with two flat tires) the short distance to the local bakery for fresh bread and cinnamon buns, with bare arms embracing the first rays of sunshine.
I started reading Americanah over a year ago, but never finished it for some inexplicable reason. Exams are likely to blame. I picked it back up again, and managed to plow through The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and Her Every Fear that same week.
A pretty face and an (out of focus but still delicious) vegan carrot cake from Jord, taken on a warm Saturday in April spent strolling the streets of Malmö.
Three highlights from London: Jusu Brothers in Notthing Hill (heaven for all health/plant/minimalism/Japan fanatics), Saatchi Galleries (a manageable space filled with curated modern art that is well worth a second glance) and a Union Jack-adorned street in Covent Garden.
My second roll of film is already loaded in my Pentax, ready to capture a summer filled with ferry rides to Hven, outdoor bar excursions to Malmö, a game or two of kubb and strawberry-loaded breakfasts on the balcony.
